Great Ways To DIY Handmade Fishing Lures

By Roger Phillips

There used to be a time when all anglers had to catch or craft their own fish bait. Angling is one thing that can be very easy to do and most of its equipment may even be done DIY, except for the rods, reels and lines. With these few basic items, a person can just take out his tackle and go out angling on a hot summer day.

Bait is something that most people have preferences for, some believing that live bait is the best, while others trust their old fly or floating lure. Handmade fishing lures are a quirky market item with trends cropping up every now and then and becoming standards for a new generation of anglers. But the basic need is the same for having these look like things the big fish like to eat.

The nature of these things say that they conform to natural standards. But then, some think that they should come in bright and bold colors. These will also depend on the species that are fished for, because there are specific food that are popular for different fishing areas that are used.

The fishermen using flies are after species that prefer winged creatures like flies to eat. These are often very colorful, and bold colors means delicious to some segments of the submarine populace. Lures are colored in different ways, then, specific to fish species, perhaps or angler preference, and often colored like those species that belong to the lower orders of fish.

Again, these can be done DIY, and you can choose from among a variety of your personal preferences. For instance, you can customize on the soft wood that you use for shaping the lure. Other things you need also come in many varieties, for the eye screws, to hooks, splits rings, paints and acrylic colors.

The components for creating lures strong like water sealants and bonding epoxy will not at all different from each other. The optional items include a base for these lures or for leaving the wood as is. The materials used for making these DIY are all available at fishing equipment stores, and they will also have things like commercial lures on display.

For shaping the wood, you need a sharp, woodworking tool. But since lures are very small, you should use smaller implements like a rasper and some sandpaper, so parts of it do not break off. If you use cutting tools not made for wood, you will likely get cut at any time you are making your object.

Machines cannot mass manufacture lures, because the softwood will break easy from all the power tools and machinery used. Making them is a small enough part of the recreational side of the industry. They are easy enough to do DIY and will not be time intensive or require much effort.

These things are highly cost effective and inexpensive, and experienced anglers know how to make them with care. Many believe in the divine spirit guiding the fishing ritual and the making of lures. This is part of the lore that makes for the best angling experience.
