Different Names And Identifies Of The Supreme Being

By Cynthia Wilson

While there are many whom believe in God, there are a number of others who do not share such belief. Although, for those who do, honoring the Supreme Being through worship and praise is often at the forefront of life. In most cases, those whom believe either believe in God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit, in a Creator, or as with the Native Americans, the Great Mystery. Whereas, those of the Jewish faith believe in God though not necessarily that Jesus is the son of God.

Saints, philosophers and theologians all use the term on a regular basis when referring to God as defined by the Christian faith. Although, there are a number of other faiths in which the term is used to define different aspects of the Divine. For example, Islam, Hindu, Judaism, Sikhism and Deism all use the phrase as an alternative to God.

Whereas, Deists often refer to the higher power as the divine source of creation. As such, while most believe in a universal God, there are others whom believe in a number of different deities. In most cases, those worshipping a multitude of deities are often considered pagans. While this is the case, there are many whom also believe in a higher power which reigns supreme over all others.

In most areas, paganism is often seen as a cult whether those involved are practicing witchcraft or otherwise. For, while most Catholic and Christian rituals were handed down from ancient pagan traditions, many in the faith often see those involved in the practice as doing the work of Satan or the devil. Whereas, those involved often believe that Wicca and other branches of paganism are actually still the oldest religions known to man.

More religious sects often refer to the Supreme or higher power as God though with different terminology than that of Christians. For example, Muslims refer to God as Allah. Whereas, those practicing Sikhism refer to Waheguru which refers to the teacher of all things. Others, such as those of Judaic faith often refer to God as Yahweh and other names practiced within the faith.

The terms for God are even more plentiful when it comes to a number of religious or spiritual ideologies. For example, when it comes to Jewish Mysticism known as Kabbalah, there are 42 different names for God based on various syllables and meanings. As such, while many believe God is One, or a Holy Trinity, there are others whom believe in one creative force.

Most often, scientists reject the creation and intelligent design stories of the Christian faith in favor of theories such as the big bang or evolution. While this is the case, there are now some scientists whom agree that God could very well have created the big bang or other theories as part of creation. Still, there are many more whom need verifiable proof before one can believe in the existence of anything, be it Supreme or otherwise.

Other positions related to the existence of a higher power can be both positive and negative. For example, Theism and Atheism are both positions of belief. However, while one allows for the possibility of the existence, the other entirely rejects the theory. As such, there are those who believe and those whom refute the existence of any higher power. On the other hand, there are also those whom believe in Gnosticism and Agnosticism which leave open the possibility that there is a divine presence, just one that has not yet been identified.
