Useful Information On Jacketed Valves

By Jessica Morgan

Several components working together for a specific aim make up a process system. There are several components that make up a typical system in production, including valves, stainless steel tanks, pumps and vessels. Stainless steel pipes are used to join the various components. Usually, during production, there is a lot of temperature change that happens in the product stream. As the products flow through various components the change in temperature occurs.

The effect of the changes in temperature is thermal damage or rapid rises in viscosity. Other effects include possible solidification and partial crystallization. The use of jackets on the piping and valves can go a long way in minimizing or avoiding the problems mentioned above completely. Jacketing involves fitting another tube over the piping so as to allow a fluid to pass through the outer tube. The same is also done on valves to make jacketed valves.

Heat is transferred to or from the product as the fluid passes the through the tube. For this reason, the fluid plays the role of keeping the temperatures stable. Jacketing is commonly used in the confectionery industry. It is commonly practiced in the food industry in general including the dairy and breakfast industry.

Stainless materials are of much preference for jacketing. Despite stainless steel being of much preference, other materials can be used too. For example, processes that involve usage of raised temperatures require the use of materials that are resistant to corrosion. The most commonly used materials for such applications are specialty alloys. Elevated temperatures are common in the production of certain salty mixtures, sauces and syrups.

Valves used in a production line in a factory need special treatment because of the role they play. For instance, valves are susceptible to damage by elevated temperatures. Thus, they are protected using jackets in the same way that piping is protected. The importance of protecting valves is that if it fails, the affected production line shuts down. This can cost the company a lot of time and money because production can only continue after the broken valve has been replaced or repaired.

Valves need to be protected since acquiring them is very costly. When the cost of acquiring or repairing a valve and maintenance costs are compared, a new valve is quite expensive. For this reason, most companies prefer having the valves protected other than having them fail in order to be replaced or repaired.

There are different jacket configurations available from the market. Some jackets are placed around the valve to protect it. In case the jackets need to be removed, they can be removed without much effort. Bolt-on jacketing is an example of jackets that are removable. Bolt-on jackets are usually made in form of two-piece aluminum casting.

Bolton jacketing can be made in any size to suit valves of different sizes. The shape can also be customized to fit on valves of various models. They have a thin layer of heat transfer mastic for transferring heat in either direction of the valve. They also have inlets and outlets for transferring heating medium. Heating mediums used water, steam, hot oil vapor, hot oil, and glycol.
