By Carolyn Kennedy

The best way to improve at something is by constantly practicing and setting out planned programs. This does not differ with hockey. Using Sporting Goods Louisiana and setting out planned hockey practice drills will allow for the full maximization of a practice and can highlight your strengths and weaknesses allowing one to rank themselves as either a beginner, intermediate or advanced player.

This will allow for a coach to set the right practice drills for the team. There are many drills that can be done namely: Ball handle drills, Passing, Shooting and Attacking strategies and finally Offensive and Defensive drills.

Firstly, we will look at the Control drills mainly focusing on the control method. These drills have been created to assist with the coordination of the movement between the ball and the players hockey stick. When using this method, the player is required to position their feet a shoulder length apart from each other whilst placing their right hand on the hockey stick. Their left hand is used to drop the ball down onto the ground. The player is then required to get into the required formation and dribble the ball as it hits the ground. Beginners benefit the most from this as it teaches them how to get into the control zone.

The Straight, Loose and Indian are others ball control techniques used. They focus on three dribbling strategies and are examples of the most effective techniques well precticed by professionals.

The Straight dribble is a protection dribble method as the constant contact that the ball has to the stick provides protection against opponents. This dribbling technique requires a basic grip to the hockey stick and the player places the stick to the right of their body ensuring that they eyes are placed in front of them. This type of focus allows for the player to be aware of other players and leaves room for an easy ball pass.

The Dribble technique can be used borrows similar rules from the straight technique but focuses on speed. To accelerate the ball is tapped by the stick and does not maintain constant contact with it which allows for faster passes.

The most challenging of the three dribbling methods mentioned is the Indian dribble. It is popularly known for its difficulty as it requires consistent complex movements and gives the player with the ball a greater defence advantage. The player has to hold the stick with a basic grip and position their left hand to the right ensuring that the stick is at 180 degrees. This makes it difficult for other players to steal it.

To create good hockey practice drills, especially for beginners, ball contact and dribbling methods are essential as it familiarizes the player with the ball and how to interact with it. This forms the foundation before defensive and attacking drills as these require a higher-level player.
