Through tools used in bioinformatics, researchers and scientists can promote a better understanding of the evolutionary process through molecular biology. Now, these individuals have taken this research and science a step further in using the application to determine healthy cells from others which may show signs of disease or damage.

When integrated with related data, the application can often help catalogue and analyze biological networks and pathways which are essential to systems biology. While, when it comes to structural biology, the process is often used in modeling and simulation of DNA and RNA proteins. As such, anyone working in this area must be comfortable with the biological, chemical, mathematical and analytical aspects of the field.

Bioinformatics had a different definition and purpose in the past than it does in the present. Originally, the term coined by Ben Harper and Paulien Hogeweg referred to the area of data management and information processes. While at the time, the definition placed bioinformatics in a field parallel to biochemistry, the term is now seen as an umbrella under which all related work is an aspect.

Ultimately, the application is now created by and used in, molecular biology, systems biology and biochemistry. In doing so, the goal has become to study how cellular activities are altered when individuals are experiencing various states of disease. As a result, the field has grown to the point where researchers and scientists are now looking at bioinformatics in order to interpret and analyze large sets of data related to the medical field.
