By Sharon Kennedy

Substance abuse is the use of drugs for non-medical related purposes and in amounts that are harmful to the body of a human being. There are many centers that conduct substance abuse treatment MI. This can help addicts to get their lives on track and encourage sobriety. Commonly abused drugs include alcohol, cocaine, opioids among others. There are many ways in which the drug centers conduct treatment to addicts.

The most common method of treatment is called individual counselling. This is whereby the affected person is taken to a therapist by his or her family members. The therapist is responsible for giving the addict to the necessary steps he or she must take to regain control of his or her life. Apart from advice on drug use, the addict is shown how to engage in helpful activities that will keep him or her from engaging in drug use. The therapist carries out a follow-up to ensure that the patient is on track again. Recommendations are made if the counselor deems it necessary.

Group counseling is one more way of treatment. It is mainly used to develop social skills among the addicts. They share their problems and experiences among themselves in the presence of a therapist. It improves the social life of the addict and their discussions help to inspire a healthy lifestyle. The therapist then guides them on the proper ways to handle their addictions and assign each member with a sober companion to mentor them. An example of group counseling is alcoholics anonymous.

Another method that is commonly used is called the outpatient treatment. It is an effective method that is less costly. It is suitable for people who have busy schedules on their program. It also works for those whose level of abuse is not as dire. It is mostly voluntary for people who have want to quit a bad habit like smoking. Depending on the dedication a patient gives to the cause, it can be very effective. There also programs of this kind that deal with mental disorders as well.

The short-term residential program is based on the twelve step approach. It was designed to dwell on alcohol-related issues but later it was used to treat other types of substance use like cocaine. A patient stays in the hospital for three to six weeks and it is necessary to make regular follow ups once you leave the facility. Aftercare programs are important to avoid relapse.

Addicts who are fatal are advised to take up the long-term program that provides care for a whole day. The therapist does not leave the side of the patient at all until he or she recovers. It takes six months to a whole year to enable the patient to regain control of his or her life. The therapist helps the individual turn to a new leaf and acquire good behaviors.

Arresting illegal drug users and placing them in a cell is also a way used to curb hard narcotics. Once in jail the users are treated under pressure and shown ways to earn a living away from drugs. Once released the probability of relapse is low due to the fear of authority.

Medication can also be given to those who are ailing as a result of excessive drug use. This helps to deal with the cravings that come constantly. Allocation of medicine is also given to reduce side effects that could kill a person who has been an addict for too long.
